Indian Mound Neighborhood Association Meeting Minutes from July 17, 2017

Next Meeting: Monday, August 21st, 6:30pm at North-East Branch Library (6000 Wilson Ave, KCMO 64123)

July is the month that IMNA collects dues from members for the year. (Individuals: $20, Over 55: $10, Business: $30)

Officer Smith from KCPD discussed crime issues in the neighborhood

  • Crime stats for May and June were provided
  • The data was organized through a new iShare program that can filter crime data
    • Includes date, type of crime, whether firearms were used, etc
    • Mary Cyr requested that the labels on the graph be adjusted so that the whole phrase could be read, rather than cut off
    • Amanda Wilson pointed out that the location of each crime was not included on the same page as the rest of the description; Officer Smith will make the adjustments for next month
    • Manny Abarca would like to see data for recent months compared to the same month the year before
  • Officer Smith mentioned several addresses that KCPD had looked into recently
  • Several neighbors from N. Drury attended the meeting to voice their concerns about several recent shootings on their block
    • One person was fatally shot this year
    • Several drive-by shootings
    • Very loud music on the weekends
    • Officer Smith said that KCPD will send its “Impact” team to investigate and collaborate with KCMO Codes and DART to target problem properties

Indian Mound Neighborhood Association held elections for President and Treasurer

  • Resident Estella Morales presided as election judge.
  • Bryan Stalder was elected as IMNA President
  • Donna Miller-Brown was elected as IMNA Treasurer

Property owner Jaime Diaz and a local contractor presented on plans to build a 4-plex near Hardesty & Smart Ave

  • Diaz currently owns the building at 402 Hardesty Ave and two adjacent vacant lots
  • He wants to build multi-family housing on the vacant lots
  • Needs to get a special permit to override the current zoning, which doesn’t allow for 4-plexes
  • Parking will be behind the proposed buildings
  • The contractor will email the building plans to Bryan Stalder when they become available

Jimmy Thomas, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer

  • Working in Indian Mound on Codes Violations
    • Collecting data and canvassing the neighborhood
  • Resources for residents dealing with codes violations
    • Neighborhood Accountability Board helps residents deal with certain codes violations outside of the municipal system
    • IMNA can educate residents on how to deal with trash and brush
    • City programs, residents can call 311 to learn more
    • Organizations provide services for home repair (Christmas in October, Jerusalem Farm, etc)

Jenna Wilkins, Parks Committee Chair

  • On Wednesday, July 12, IMNA made a presentation at the 4th District Public PIAC Hearing
  • Requested funding for 3 projects: 1) Renovating Budd Park Shelter, 2) Establishing dog park at the Northeast Athletic Field, 3) Installing security cameras at Indian Mound Park

  • Tuesday, August 1st, 6pm – 9pm, National Night Out event hosted by Indian Mound Neighborhood Association at the Budd Park Esplanade
