Thacher School was built in 1900 at Independence Ave. and Quincy Ave.

It was closed in 2009, and in 2011 there was a fire inside of the school. In 2015, the City Council voted to demolish the school. The Kansas City School District is currently building new athletic fields on the grounds. The completed space will also include a memorial to Thacher School.

Recovered stone from the school was used to create three neighborhood markers, which were installed in in January 2020.
